At the Beach Sports Photography

When a morning at the beach in Mallorca with Harry Palmer, leads to one of the most creative and terrifying sports photography moments I’ve had so far! And no, it wasn’t Halloween, it was because I decided it would be safe enough to take my camera equipment into the sea, then quickly thought to myself “what am I doing?”, but then it was already too late!

The reason we were in the water was because whilst out in Spain for a week creating content for Harry’s social media platforms and sponsors, we wanted to do some product shots for Blueseventy - a triathlon and competitive swimwear company. As the ocean was looking mostly still, it was the perfect opportunity to take a dip and with expensive kit!

The photoshoot went remarkably well, as you will see from the pictures below. The best shots in my opinion, were the ones where I shot between waves, to create a very blurred foreground, as the next wave was coming in higher than my camera and lens. This worked extremely well, but it was very nerve-racking given I didn’t have any form of underwater cage, so my equipment was at the complete exposure to the elements. All, but one shot there were no issues with what I was trying with the waves, apart from one! One wave definitely hit the tip of my lens hood and luckily that was it. But it certainly made my heart skip a few beats!

Overall, I absolutely loved this little sports photoshoot with Harry and the Blueseventy swim skin he was using. It isn’t everyone’s idea of how spend time on a Spanish beach, but that is the life of a sports photographer trying to move up in the World.
